The main function of IMVU is much like an IM (Instant Messaging) program, but includes 3D elements that make it more like a video game. In many ways it resembles a more social, chat orientated version of Second Life.

IMVU lets you set up 3D avatars and customize your character with thousands of clothing, accessory options, rooms and pets. One of the best features is the blind chat. With a mouse click, it will launch a chat with a random person from anywhere around the world who also has their settings set to “chat.” This is a great way to meet people online.

You are launched into 3D background scenario, in one case for example, a bar appeared on the screen with a couple of beers were waiting for us on a table. Both avatars sat at the table, and started chatting in stylized bubbles.

There’s all sorts of actions you can do during a chat, one guy did a karate kick on the screen, and asked the person he was chatting with, “can you do that?” The person’s response was to get up and walk away. The whole thing struck me as funny so a giggled a little bit.

This one of the great things about the software. Seeing peoples reactions in the form of an online 3D avatar is highly entertaining. You can hug or kiss someone in IMVU and you can also start a fight or do something really nasty such as punch or slap another person.

My only caveat is the fact they have no Mac version yet. Also, it is highly addictive so if you don’t want to escape into an online world for a while you may be off playing an arcade shoot-em-up. Other than that, this is a great way to socialize online that blows away traditional chat rooms. I highly recommend you download IMVU and try it out for yourself.
